Department Vision, Mission, and Objectives

  1. Department Mission Statement

“Educate our students to promote and revitalize the tangible and intangible human heritage in Gilgit-Baltistan, through engaged field research, documentation, and learning opportunities".

1.1 Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies

Our mission is to provide the first high-quality undergraduate education in the fields of Archaeology and Heritage Studies with a focus on the region of Gilgit-Baltistan. Through the academic programs, the department will play a central role in cultural heritage tourism; advocating for the heritage in the area through both public and government engagement; and the physical conservation of archaeological sites and both tangible and intangible heritage. Academic programs based on international best practices emphasize practical experiential learning, and graduates will be well prepared for professional careers and advanced degrees in their respective fields, with the competencies required for 21st Century practice.

The Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies will establish a museum in the University of Baltistan, Skardu, with connections to regional and national museums and international organizations, for the preservation and study of the region’s unique and under-researched heritage.
