In today’s highly materialistic and self-centered world, where everyone is overwhelmed by personal and professional commitments, it is highly commendable and noble for young people and Scouts to remain prepared to serve humanity during emergencies and natural disasters. Vice Chancellor of the University of Baltistan, Skardu, Prof. Dr. Masood Akhtar, expressed these views while specially participating in and addressing a training session jointly organized by UNICEF, Pakistan Boy Scouts Association (PBSA), and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The Vice Chancellor appreciated the organizers for arranging the training session and appreciated its high standard and practical activities. He also congratulated the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association, UNICEF, and NDMA on the successful organization of the program. He formally invited the Chief Trainer and organizers to conduct similar modern and practical disaster management training programs at the University of Baltistan, Skardu, so that the university’s faculty members and students could also receive practical training in disaster preparedness, prevention, and emergency management.

The primary objective of the training session was to provide participants with knowledge and practical skills related to disaster risk management, particularly the “Disaster Risk Management Badge,” and to highlight the active and effective role Scouts can play during emergencies.

The workshop, organized under the theme “Disaster Risk Management Badge,” was attended by young Scouts and representatives from all provinces of Pakistan. On the occasion, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Ashfaque Ahmad Shah, and Dr. Faiz Ali also accompanied the Vice Chancellor and closely observed the entire training process.

Chief Trainer Zahid Mehboob provided Scouts with comprehensive and practical training on immediate response during natural disasters, earthquakes, floods, and other emergency situations. He also trained participants in supporting relief operations and organizing rescue and relief efforts effectively.

He further explained how Scouts, through discipline, teamwork, and a spirit of service to humanity, can become a strong source of support for local administrations and affected communities during times of crisis.
