The University of Baltistan, Skardu (UoBS) has achieved a significant milestone in research and innovation with the registration of three international patents in the fields of natural products, medicinal chemistry, and green nanotechnology.
The patents have emerged from the research activities of Dr. Nusrat Hussain’s Research Group, Department of Chemistry, University of Baltistan, Skardu, in collaboration with Dr. Ajmal Khan’s Research Group at the University of Nizwa, Oman. The achievement highlights the growing strength of international research collaboration and demonstrates the scientific potential of the region’s medicinal plants and natural resources.
Two patents focusing on antidiabetic applications have been registered with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt). One patent concerns the bio-fabrication of silver nanoparticles using the therapeutic lichen Rusavskia elegans, while the second focuses on the use of Delphinium brunonianum leaf extract.
A third patent, registered with the Japan Patent Office (JPO), focuses on the green fabrication of copper nanoparticles using Rosa webbiana extract for the environmental control of pathogenic bacteria.
The three patents represent an important achievement for the University of Baltistan, particularly for Dr. Nusrat Hussain’s Research Group, and underscore the value of collaborative research with international partners. The research integrates expertise in natural product chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and green nanotechnology, with a particular emphasis on environmentally sustainable and biologically relevant technologies.
The achievements further highlight the remarkable scientific potential of plant and lichen resources and their promising applications in biomedical research, environmental protection, and the development of sustainable technologies.
