Introduction
The Department of Languages and Cultural Studies was established in 2012 as part of Karakoram International University, Skardu Campus, which was later upgraded in 2017 to a federally chartered university, University of Baltistan, Skardu. Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to excellence in research and teaching in languages, literatures, and cultures. It is keen to provide a dynamic academic and research environment, aimed at equipping students with strong linguistic, literary, analytical, and intercultural competencies, to prepare them for a range of professions in academia, research, media, public service, and others. The outcome-based learning provided by the department fosters critical inquiry and the convergence of cutting-edge digital and interdisciplinary skills and approaches.
Apart from its usual academic focus, the department particularly focuses on documentation, preservation, and critical study of the rich literary, linguistic, and cultural heritage of Gilgit-Baltistan, rooting it in the broader national and international milieu. From its establishment, the department has always upheld a key role in shaping the academic identity of the institution. Today, it proudly stands as a leading department in intellectual vigor and rigor, research production, and meaningful contribution to the academic, literary, linguistic, and cultural landscape of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, and beyond.

Our Vision
The Department of Languages and Cultural Studies, University of Baltistan, Skardu, envisions becoming a leading center of excellence, in line with the overall vision of UoBS of ‘harnessing the unique natural heritage’ of Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan, by promoting linguistic, literary, and cultural scholarship for the preservation, promotion, and critical study of regional languages, literatures, and cultures alongside global traditions. The department envisions itself as a center that fosters intellectual inquiry, cultural research, documentation, and preservation, and focuses on impactful research and socio-cultural development, contributing to the academic advancement of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, and the wider world.
Our Mission
The mission of the Department of Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Baltistan, Skardu, is to promote excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement in the fields of language, literature, culture, and intercultural studies. The department is committed to preserving and promoting the rich literary, linguistic, and cultural heritage of Baltistan and the broader Himalayan–Karakoram region, while fostering critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and global perspectives. Through innovative academic programs, scholarly research, and inclusive dialogue, the department aims to develop competent, ethical, and socially responsible graduates who make meaningful contributions to local, national, and international communities.
