The Department of Botany, approved by the Academic Council in its 7th meeting held in 2023.The founding Head of Department, Dr. Alamdar Hussain, with a clear vision to harness the high botanical potential of the region and to promote excellence in botanical sciences. From its inception, the department has been committed to developing a strong academic and research culture aligned with regional priorities and global standards.
The department is well equipped with modern laboratory facilities and has successfully established a Herbarium and a dedicated Plant Pathology Laboratory. This laboratory has been established under EvK2CNR project(W4Development). It is supported by a team of well-qualified and dedicated faculty members who are actively engaged in teaching, mentoring, and innovative research. The department is involved in cutting-edge research and has initiated the MS program in Botany and aims to launch some other programs including short courses and certificates in the near future. Major areas of specialization include Ecology, Plant Physiology, Plant Pathology, Plant Taxonomy, Ethnobotany, Phytochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biodiversity Conservation.
In addition to academics and research, the department maintains strong collaborations with national and international organizations and contributes to society through effective linkages with the Agriculture and Forest Department Gilgit Baltistan, PARC, LUMS and other national universitites for sustainable utilization and processing of natural resources and active engagement with local communities. The department regularly organizes trainings, career counseling sessions, scientific conferences, and workshops, fostering capacity building, innovation, and professional development.
