Tourism and Hospitality Management

Introduction:

Gilgit-Baltistan with its diversified geographical topography, natural scenic sites, glaciers, lakes, mountains, pastures, biodiversity, and cultural heritage is a heaven for tourists. All types of tourism, particularly Adventure Tourism, Cultural Tourism, Religious Tourism, and  Agri-Tourism can be the biggest source of income for the economically deprived folks of the region. If trained human resource for public and private entrepreneur has been developed, tourism industry can play a pivotal rule in the economy of the country. Tourism is a booming industry with its developmental aspects, economic and trade opportunities, environmental and cultural implications and needs of human resources to capitalize on these opportunities.

In view of the rapidly growing tourist flow in the region, the needs and demands of market professionalism, hospitality skills, guiding expertise and ability to monitor tourist activities in terms of counter-socio-cultural activities have become important fields of consideration. In this scenario, a formal institution of training and capacity building is a dire need. Consequently, to cater to this need the University of Baltistan decided the establishment of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality and approved in the Faculty Council Meeting. This department will initially offer non-degree certificate and diploma courses along with seminars, workshops, symposia and professional briefing sessions

The department of Tourism and Hospitality Management has been brought into existence by the University of Baltistan, Skardu in the first year of its inception. The objective of the department is to meet the growing demand for tourism in GB and accomplished a well-trained cadre of human resources for tourism industry. The initially proposed program span over a duration of six months short courses. The courses provide hands-on experience imparting training in both theoretical and practical aspects of the Tourism and Hospitality management.
